Michael Jordan’s 16-footer at the buzzer capped a 32-point performance that carried the Chicago Bulls to a 99-98 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at the Omni, which was sold out for the first time in the 94/95 season. Jordan, 14-for-26 from the field, seemed to be regaining the shooting touch that became rusty during his 19 months away. Still not in peak condition, he got 18 of his 32 points in the third quarter, matching Atlanta’s total for the period. With 20 seconds remaining in the game, the Hawks held onto a one-point lead. Smith tried to seal the win, but Jordan came over and forced him into an airball. Atlanta maintained possession, but had to shoot to prevent a shot clock violation. Andrew Lang’s missed jumpshot was collected by Jordan, who called a timeout with 5.9 seconds to go. It was the first time Jordan had the opportunity to shoot with the game on the line since coming out of retirement. The victory gave the Bulls a 2-2 record since his return.
